What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that is stored on your browser when you visit almost any website. They are used for the website to remember your visit next time you browse that page. Cookies usually store technical information, personal preferences, content customisation, usage statistics, links to social media, access to user accounts, etc. The purpose of a cookie is to adapt the contents of the website to your profile and needs. Without cookies, the services offered by any web page would be significantly undermined.

 

What types of cookies are there?

Technical cookies: These are the most basic and they make it possible, among other things, to know when a human or an automated application is browsing, to know when an anonymous user and a registered user are browsing and to conduct basic tasks for running any dynamic web page.

Analytic cookies: They collect information about the type of browsing that is being performed, the sections that are most used, products consulted, time zone, language, etc.

Advertising cookies: They display advertising based on your browsing, your country of origin, language, etc.

 

What are own and third-party cookies?

Own cookies are those generated by the web page you are visiting and third-party cookies are those generated by external services or providers such as Mailchimp, Facebook, Twitter, Google Analytics, etc.

How can you manage and disable these cookies?

If you do not want websites to store any cookies and obtain information, you can set up the browser so that you are notified before any cookies being downloaded.
You can also adapt the browser settings to block all cookies.

Here are the procedures to enable or disable cookies in the main browsers:

Chrome:

– Click on the key icon in the upper right corner of your browser.
– Select Options (for Mac, select Preferences).
– Click on the Advanced tab (Under the Hood).
– Click on Content Settings.
– Click on Cookies.
– Click Allow local data to set (recommended).

Internet Explorer 7+:

– Go to the top of the browser window and select Tools.
– Click on Internet Options.
– Click on the Privacy tab, and then select Advanced Options.
– Mark Cancel the automatic management of cookies (if it is already marked, continue with the next step).
– First set third-party cookies to be accepted.
– Mark Always allow cookies and click OK.

Mozilla Firefox:

– Click on Tools and then Options.
– In the upper part of the window, select Privacy.
– Mark the options Accept cookies from sites and Accept third-party cookies and click OK.

Safari:

– In the Safari menu, click on Preferences.
– Click on Security.
– In the Accept cookies section, select either Always or Only from the sites you browse.
